St Andrew of Crete

Meanwhile I had gone to an introduction to Islamic Art day course and I had been looking at Islamic Art Patterns (there's a great book published by the British Museum that lists many). I had also been looking at wall paper and, whilst doing the previous St Andrew, discovered that there was more than one. Using an old photo from the Standard that had long enthralled me, I used that to do St Andrew of Crete, who fought in the battle of the iconoclasts. As the iconoclast debate is somewhat relevant to my practice I thought it was a necessary thing to do. The pattern is taken from manuscript in the BL.
Oil on gesso, about 6 x 4 inches
